This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into thermal stress and strain. As the temperature increases, the length of the rod increases; therefore, a compressive force is exerted by the two vertical supports to keep the rod at constant length - the material is under compressive stress. As the temperature decreases, the length of the rod natural decreases. Therefore, the clamps exert a tensile force to keep it at constant length - the material is under tensile stress. The force is the product of the elastic modulus / young's modulus, the cross-sectional area, the coefficient of linear expansion, and the change in temperature. The thermal stress is the force divided by the area.
