This physics video tutorial explains why some objects sink and why other objects float. The answer is density. For example, ice floats on water because ice is lower density than water. A block of aluminum metal sinks in water since the density of aluminum is greater than the density of water. A helium balloon rises because the density of helium is lower than the density of air. Hot air rises and cold air sinks because hot air is light and cold air is heavy.
