For seven months Spring Films has had exclusive access to HMP Durham, the first television crew to be invited into a British prison for a number of years. Spring Series producer Paddy Wivell and the crew filmed every day, witnessing in intimate detail the daily life of a prison and what makes it tick from the prisoner and staff’s point of view. See Episode 1 Here: https://youtu.be/kU5k7ZZ2j18 See Episode 2 Here: https://youtu.be/qHO8ju6aKBM The series gives a ‘never seen before’ uncompromising look at British prison life and is by turns grim, humorous, shocking, warmly affecting and inspirational. Durham is one of Britain’s oldest prisons, built in 1810 and receiving its first intake of prisoners in 1819. It is now a Reception Prison for NE England serving the courts of Newcastle, Durham, Teeside and Cumbria. At any one time, Durham holds just under 1000 male prisoners. Some stay here to complete their entire sentence – but for many this is a stop-over where they stay on remand whilst awaiting court sentencing or before being transferred to another prison. The series takes a multi faceted look at the prison system during a period of significant challenge and reform focusing on the day-to-day lives of prisoners and staff. New prisoners arrive daily with complex medical, emotional and health needs all of which need to be assessed and catered for. Every cell and every bed is occupied and every day, prison officers are fighting a war against drugs and smuggled mobile phones. Prisoners arrive charged with everything from murder to dangerous driving and drug dealing to assault. The turn over is high – with between two and three hundred new prisoners arriving a week - a huge logistical challenge for staff which puts immense pressure on the prison’s limited accommodation. Commissioned by Nick Mirsky, the series producer and director is Paddy Wivell, the award winning documentary maker whose previous work includes Extremely British Muslims, The Tribe and Bedlam. The 3 programmes deal with the 3 main issues affecting prison life today: drugs, violence and mental health: **This film is under non-exclusive license from Blue Ant. All rights reserved.
