In this lesson, Chad provides a brief introduction to elimination reactions before specifically covering E2 and E1 elimination in subsequent lessons. He begins with a discussion of the stability of alkenes, how generally the more substituted alkene is the more stable alkene. He then explains the anatomy of an elimination reaction which involves the loss of a leaving group (often a halide) and a hydrogen and the formation of a pi bond resulting in an alkene and shows why it is often referred to as beta elimination. Finally, Chad concludes the lesson with an explanation of Zaitsev's Rule (aka Saytzeff's Rule) showing both the Zaitsev product and Hofmann product (aka anti-Zaitsev product) in an example.
