Chad breaks down the halogenation of alkynes in this lesson. He begins by reviewing the halogenation of alkenes which proceeds through a halonium ion intermediate resulting in an anti-addition. But the mechanism for alkynes is different as both syn and anti addition is possible. Chad further explains that halogenation can occur either once or twice with alkynes depending upon whether 1 or 2 equivalents of the halogen are used.
