Bill Clinton issues an open warning, news channels scream danger, and experts predict that planes could fall from the sky, banks might stop functioning, and even nuclear systems could misfire—all because of a seemingly small coding flaw called the Y2K bug. Back in the 1960s and 70s, computer memory was extremely expensive, so engineers saved space by storing years as two digits—“61” instead of “1961.” But when 1999 turned into 2000, millions of computers risked interpreting it as 1900, triggering massive errors across banking, aviation, and power systems worldwide. Fixing this wasn’t simple—it required rewriting millions of lines of code manually. And while the United States had engineers, most were busy chasing the excitement of the dot-com boom, building companies like Amazon and Google. Very few wanted to do the tedious, repetitive work needed to fix legacy systems. As a result, major American and European corporations found themselves on the edge of a technological crisis, with no one willing to solve it. That’s when a group of engineers from India stepped in. One of the key players was Infosys, led by N. R. Narayana Murthy. In 1999 alone, Infosys earned $100 million, establishing itself as a global IT force. But this wasn’t overnight success—these engineers had been preparing for 18 years, starting with no venture capital, no internet, and not even a computer. Today, Infosys generates over ₹1.6 lakh crore in revenue and ₹26,000 crore in profit, with its stock rising nearly 14,000% since 1999. The real question is: how did seven engineers from India build a billion-dollar company against all odds—and what can we learn from their journey? Our Best Indian Business Case Studies: 1.
