Single phase induction motors (with only main windings) suffer from two problems. Firstly, the induced torque corresponding to stationary rotor is zero, therefore, these motors are not self starting. Secondly, the induced torque corresponding to non-zero speed of rotor is fluctuating in magnitude which causes vibrations in the motor. This lecture discusses the solutions to the mentioned problem. To make the induction motors self-starting, auxiliary windings are added on the stator in addition to the main windings. These auxiliary windings results into non-zero starting torque to make is self-starting. There are different variations for the auxiliary windings, these are Capacitor-start capacitor-run windings Capacitor-start windings Capacitor-run windings Split phase windings Shaded pole motors
