This lecture explains the working and use of compensating windings in DC machines. Compensating Windings (CW) resolve the problems of neutral plane shift and flux weakening which are caused by armature reaction. However, compensating windings cannot overcome the voltage kickback effects, and therefore, interpoles are also used in combination with CW.

Compensating windings are conductors placed in the main magnets of DC machine. These windings are supplied by the same (proportional) current which flows in the armature windings (rotor windings). Hence, these windings cancel out the mmf due to armature windings thereby restoring a uniform flux distribution along the surface of the rotor.
