In Lecture 4 (of the six we are showing, see 'Probability' playlist), we introduce the notion of independence of events, capturing the idea that certain events do not influence each other, and we introduce the notion of a discrete random variable as a function on a probability space, representing an observable in a random experiment. We introduce probability mass functions to describe the distribution of a random variable.
