ln this lecture, the first of two on conics, Alain Goriely explains how conics, or conic sections, are the curves obtained by intersecting a plane with a cone. They are central to many problems in mathematics, physics, and engineering. Conics can also be defined in the plane as a set of points satisfying particular distance conditions or as the loci of quadratic function in two variables. In these lectures, Alain defines conics, explores their properties and shows the equivalence between these different definitions.
