In the second of 2 lectures from her 3rd Year Undergraduate course (you can watch the first on this channel), Christina Goldschmidt discusses Birth processes. Birth processes are some of the simplest continuous-time Markov chains: they model the size of a population which can only increase over time. They have a simple construction in terms of independent exponential random variables, but can nonetheless exhibit non-trivial behaviour, in particular the phenomenon of "explosion," whereby infinitely many individuals are born in a finite amount of time.
