In the third lecture from her 4th year Mathematical Physiology course, Christiana Mavroyiakoumou explains how moving molecules against a chemical gradient requires energy. Such a process is known as an active transport mechanism. One of the most important examples is the sodium–potassium pump, which pumps sodium ions out of the cell against a steep electrochemical gradient, while pumping potassium ions in. To understand how this works, we will also talk about the Nernst potential and the resting potential.
