Plane stress and plane strain states are defined as special cases of the three dimensional stress and strain state. The constitutive relations for anisotropic materials, orthotropic materials and isotropic materials are reviewed. The stress-strain relations for plane stress and plane strain are obtained. The plane stress relations for composite materials is discussed. Thin panel structures are often used in aerospace and the plane stress approximation is quite useful for these structures. #aerospaceengineering #structuralmechanics #solidmechanics
