Here's a simple kicking tip to keep your hands up when you're training self-defense skills. Let me know if it helps! ►Take my 7-DAY MARTIAL ARTS CHALLENGE! http://www.senseiando.com/updates/ Dropping one or both hands while kicking is a common bad habit in the martial arts. Wait! Before you write me an angry comment, there are times when dropping your guard might make sense... 1) You might drop a hand in order to counter-balance a high kick. 2) You might drop a hand in order to add power to a kick through counter-rotation. 3) You might drop your hands in order to draw an opponent in a little bit closer. All of that is fine by me. Why? Because you’re dropping your guard on purpose! I’m talking about the people who have no idea when they're dropping their guard. So, here's a drill. I call it "Holding the Baby". Grab a pillow or a rolled up jacket and pretend you’re carrying a baby. That’s it! Now, practice your kicks. I know it sounds really easy, there’s a big difference between kicking with your hands behind your body or in front. There's also a big difference between kicking with your hands down or up. You goal should be to build a habit of always maintaining a strong guard. Once you have that, then you can choose to throw a hand down as part of your strategy any time you want. You can practice the same idea by slinging a belt or tee shirt around your neck. That will give you something to hang on to while you practice your kicks. You can even just grab your own collar. Easy and effective! Hey—while you're at it, grab a pair of socks or a tennis ball and put that under your chin. That will help you keep your chin down and your head straight while you’re throwing kicks instead of letting it bob around. So, hands up, chin down. Two crucial habits that will help keep you alive when you’re throwing kicks. :) THANKS FOR WATCHING!
