A thermocouple measures temperature by using the Seebeck effect, where a voltage is generated when two different metal wires are joined at one end, and this junction experiences a temperature change. The magnitude of this generated voltage, which is proportional to the temperature, is then measured by an instrument and converted into a temperature reading. The "hot junction" is the point where the two dissimilar metals are joined and exposed to the temperature being measured, while the other ends form the "cold junction" where they are connected to the measuring device.
