The human-machine interface is the area of human and machine interaction during a given task. The interaction can include touch, sight, sound, heat transference or any other physical or cognitive function, e.g., a typical computer station will have four human-machine interfaces, the keyboard (hand), the mouse (hand), the monitor (eyes) and the speakers (ears). An HMI can display text, pictures, bar graphs, bitmaps and animated pictures. More importantly it can also display system messages, reports, alarms and trends, manipulate string values and calculate Boolean operations and more complex math operations.
