In the den of the Ipswich gambrel portion is a large Ben Franklin-style fireplace that homeowner Bill would like replaced with something smaller. Mark McCullough suggests it be replaced with a Rumford-style fireplace which is narrower in depth, has a wider splay, and produces more heat. He does a bit of exploratory demo to determine if the existing chimney can accommodate the new clay flue. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. A large Ben Franklin style fireplace was since built at the gable end closest to the street, but the fire box will be replaced with a smaller Rumford style fire box using the existing chimney. To do this, Mark McCullough and Charlie Silva devise a post and beam system with jacks to support the chimney while they demo the old fireplace. Inside the gambrel portion of the house, the old Ben Franklin style fireplace has been demoed, a new clay flue has been installed, and now Kevin O'Connor and Mark McCullough begin assembling the walls of the new Rumford style fireplace that Mark pre-constructed off site.
