When a pair of homeowners chose the right materials and techniques to install their patio, they struggled to understand why it didn’t age like they pictured. Mason Mark McCullough has the answer. Where to find it? Start by using a pickaxe [https://homedepot.sjv.io/Y9anYP] to pick up the pavers and stack them by size. When reusing pavers, Mark recommends snapping a photo of the patio to use as a pattern reference for later. Using shovels [https://homedepot.sjv.io/DyW7Jj] and rakes [https://homedepot.sjv.io/1rO1dR] remove the sand [https://homedepot.sjv.io/R5arBN] or material under the pavers and set aside on tarps [https://homedepot.sjv.io/DyW7aj] to be tossed or reused. Once the sand is removed add gravel [https://homedepot.sjv.io/6ykmDK] to reestablish the base and compact with a hand tamper [https://homedepot.sjv.io/R5YjLy] or motorized compactor [https://homedepot.sjv.io/bOkYQ9]. Hose down the layer of gravel and compact again. To establish the height of the patio using stakes [https://homedepot.sjv.io/yqZYBV] and landscaping string [https://homedepot.sjv.io/RG07W9] create a line around the perimeter of the patio. Set the height of the line by measuring [https://homedepot.sjv.io/rQEBXy] the height of the paver. Set two metal railings [https://homedepot.sjv.io/o4NYa9] running parallel on the perimeter edge of the patio base. Then cover the gravel with polymeric sand [https://homedepot.sjv.io/7aXzQA] and compact it. Using a long metal or wood post, screed [https://homedepot.sjv.io/GKb7Yk] from one end of the patio to the other, creating a smooth level surface. After relaying the pavers spread a layer of sand to fill the gaps in between the pavers. Use a broom [https://homedepot.sjv.io/LK07yZ] to evenly distribute the sand.
