This event took place on May 17, 2022. Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Michael A. Lilly, who has published hundreds of articles on the military and history, wrote “Nimitz at Ease,” chronicling the true and unpublished story of how his grandparents, Una and Sandy Walker, helped Nimitz manage the tremendous pressures of war. Lilly had a distinguished career as Hawaii's attorney general and as a successful trial attorney for 45 years. A Vietnam War combat veteran, his personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and two Meritorious Service Medals. He and his wife, Cindy Walter, have four children and reside on the islands of Maui and Oahu, Hawaii. Chester Nimitz Lay is one of Fleet Admiral and Mrs. Chester W. Nimitz's six grandchildren. He graduated from Boston University cum laude with a degree in philosophy in 1970 and retired in 2017 after a 50 year career as a professional land surveyor. He has been on the board of directors of the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank since 1980. He resides with his wife, Marion, in Brewster on Cape Cod. They have two daughters, Hilary and Gillian. In the final analysis, leadership and mission accomplishment hinge on the character of the men and women, in and out of uniform, who answer the call of duty with honor, courage and commitment. This never-before-seen lecture will truly be a wonderful finale to the College’s INS Lecture Series. ISSUES IN NATIONAL SECURITY (INS) LECTURES are designed to offer scholarly lectures to the spouses, partners, and significant others of our students; military/civilian employees assigned to the Naval War College and Naval Station Newport and its tenant activities, International Sponsors, Foundation members, and local-area retirees or active/reserve personnel. The views presented by the faculty or other guest speakers do not reflect official positions of the Naval War College, DON or DOD.
