Lecture 4: Monroe Doctrines at Home and Abroad
In this lecture, the lecturer will review the reorientation of U.S. maritime strategy under the Trump administration's 2025 National Security Strategy and 2026 National Defense Strategy, both of which assert a "Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine." The two directives elevate the Western Hemisphere to the forefront of U.S. strategic priorities, depicting countering China as inextricable from U.S. interests as well. The lecture will step back to review the history of the Monroe Doctrine before projecting how the Trump Corollary—a.k.a. the "Donroe Doctrine"—may change the face of U.S. strategy in the coming years.
