Class began with tips on how to sit for meditation, both on the ground and in a chair. Then we had a review meditation on sounds, breath, sensations, and emotions. In this class, the subject of thinking was explored and how to work with it during meditation, including noting. Thinking was distinguished from the suitable objects of meditation which are all happening presently in the body, whereas thoughts are always about the past and present. Only the fact that thinking is happening is a present experience, so that can be noted, but students are encouraged not to get caught in the subjects and stories of thought which only take you away from the present.
