Law and Mental Health: Navigating difficult interviewing situations with persons with Antisocial Personality Disorder & Psychopathy -Tamara Kang Balzarini, PhD Dr. Tamara Kang is an Assistant Professor in the School of Psychological & Behavioral Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). She received her M.A. in Clinical Psychology, Ph.D. in Legal Psychology, and Quantitative Certificate from The University of Texas at El Paso. Post-graduation, she managed a federally funded grant for a multi-site, multi-state scale development, implementation, evaluation project for the Treatment Needs and Progress Scale and trained numerous treatment providers on risk assessment and treatment for youth with sex offenses. At SIUC, Dr. Kang was awarded the American Psychology-Law Society (APA Division 41) Research to Enhance the Impact and Diversification of Psychology and Law Research Grant to examine re-entry barriers and facilitators among high-risk parolees in the Southern Mississippi Delta region. Through this project, she supervises doctoral students on navigating interviews with high-risk parolees. As part of the AP-LS Corrections Committee, she has trained both jail staff and federal probation officers on navigating difficult situations with high-risk individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Learning Objectives: 1. Identify warning signs of antisocial personality disorder & psychopathy. 2. Describe interview pitfalls, practical strategies to prevent difficulties, and potential reactions to difficulties that arise during an interview. 3.
