Mohandas ("Mahatma") Gandhi and the emergence of the masses; brief biography of Gandhi; his stay in South Africa, and the idea of satyagraha; mass non-violent resistance; the non-cooperation movement of 1920-22 and the Salt Satyagraha of 1930; Quit India movement of 1942; growing rifts between Muslims and Hindus, and the phenomenon of 'communalism'; the growth of the Muslim League, and the role of Jinnah; partition, the independence of India, and the creation of Pakistan; the assassination of Gandhi in January 1948. Some reflections on the long trajectory of Indian history,the difference between a nation-state and a civilization, and the teachings of the Buddha giving us the injunction to be a light unto oneself and others.
