Brief discussion of various classes of Indian literature - dharmasastras, Arthasastra, nitisastras, and kamasastras. Obsession of Indian writers with classification. Discussion of Vatsyayana's Kamasutra, Panchatantra and 'secular' literature; the marga and the desi, the high-brow and the low-brow in Indian culture. The Goddess traditions in Hinduism are important, too. Indian folktales, and Thomas Mann's "Transposed Heads"--the notion of identity.
