History of Indian Civilization [Lec 10]; UCLA, Lecture of 1 February 2012. Hindu gods and goddesses; posters of them; and iconography of the deities. The episode of the vastraharana, the theft of the clothes; the idea of nakedness, being shorn of your ego (ahamkara). Rasleela; dasavatara; scenes from the Mahabharata--the sermon called the Bhagavad Gita. We then resume with a discussion of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras; different conceptions of yoga--eight limbs of yoga, including asanas, pranayama and the cosmology of breath; what yoga entails from us, set of abstentions and affirmations. Yoga is ultimately about the understanding and attainment of freedom. What is the place of the Gita within the scheme of yoga? What are the schools of yoga espoused by the Gita? Transition from Vedas to Upanishads and Buddhism and then the Gita. Brief discussion of bhakti yoga, karma yoga, jnana yoga. Who is Krishna and what is his status? The importance of devotion (bhakti). Krishna's Universal From (Vishwarupa). We conclude with brief introductory remarks on the Mahabharata and some thoughts on Draupadi and polyandry; allegorical reading of polyandry.
