Extended content: - Identify in diagrams and images the atrioventricular and semilunar valves in the mammalian heart. - Explain the relative thickness of the muscle walls of the left and right ventricles and the muscle walls of the atria compared to those of the ventricles. - Explain the importance of the septum in separating oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. - Describe the functioning of the heart in terms of the contraction of muscles of the atria and ventricles and the action of the valves. Context: - In our last lesson we learned about the single circulation system of fish and the double circulation of mammals. - In topic 9.3 we'll move on to look at the structures and functions of the blood vessels (arteries, capillaries and veins), including the width of lumen, thickness of walls, and the presence of pocket valves in the veins. - Finally, in topic 9.4 we'll cover the blood. You'll learn about the four components of blood (plasma, platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells), the process of clotting and the functions of lymphocytes and phagocytes.
