Extended content: - Describe the single circulation of a fish. - Describe the double circulation of a mammal. - Explain the advantages of a double circulation. Context: - In our next lesson we'll cover the structures of the heart, including the coronary arteries, atria, ventricles, septum, atrioventricular and semilunar valves, vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, aorta and muscular walls (myocardium). - In topic 9.3 we'll move on to look at the structures and functions of the blood vessels (arteries, capillaries and veins), including the width of lumen, thickness of walls, and the presence of pocket valves in the veins. - Finally, in topic 9.4 we'll cover the blood. You'll learn about the four components of blood (plasma, platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells), the process of clotting and the functions of lymphocytes and phagocytes.
