(b) white blood cells in phagocytosis and antibody production. (c) platelets in clotting (details are not required). (d) plasma in the transport of blood cells, ions, nutrients, urea, hormones and carbon dioxide. - State the roles of blood clotting as preventing blood loss and the entry of pathogens Extended content: - Identify lymphocytes and phagocytes in photomicrographs and diagrams. - State the functions of: (a) lymphocytes – antibody production. (b) phagocytes – engulfing pathogens by phagocytosis. - Describe the process of clotting as the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin to form a mesh. Context: - In topic 9.1 we learned about the single circulation system of fish and the double circulation of mammals. - In topic 9.2 we examined the structures of the heart, including the coronary arteries, atria, ventricles, septum, atrioventricular and semilunar valves, and muscular walls (myocardium). - In topic 9.3 we covered the structures and functions of the blood vessels (arteries, capillaries and veins), including the width of lumen, thickness of walls, and the presence of pocket valves in veins. We also learned about the main blood vessels to and from the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver (vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, aorta, renal artery, renal vein, hepatic artery, hepatic portal vein, hepatic vein).
