Why should we be moral? Is it because God commands it—or because reason tells us it is right? The relationship between ethics and religion is one of the oldest and most contested questions in moral philosophy. While many assume that morality depends on religious belief, philosophers have long argued that ethical reasoning can stand independently of faith. This Ethics101 course video examines the relationship between ethics and religion, and asks a fundamental question: Can morality exist without belief in God? In this session, we explore: = The historical and conceptual links between ethics and religion = Key differences between religious morality and philosophical ethics = Whether moral principles depend on divine commands or human reason = Plato’s Euthyphro dilemma and its challenge to divine command theory = Secular moral systems such as utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, and human-rights ethics = How religion can both strengthen and weaken moral life = Whether religious and secular ethics can coexist in a plural society Rather than framing the issue as belief versus disbelief, this lesson focuses on moral justification: Are actions moral because they are commanded—or because they can be reasonably defended? The video also reflects on how unquestioned obedience, moral absolutism, and dogmatism can undermine ethical thinking, while dialogue between religious and secular perspectives can enrich moral understanding. 🎯 Who this lesson is for: = UPSC GS-IV Ethics aspirants = Students of philosophy, ethics, and public policy = Civil servants and professionals working in plural societies = Anyone reflecting on the foundations of moral judgment You can also follow us on: Website - https://www.ethics101.in/ Instagram - https://instagram.com/ethics.101 Twitter - https://twitter.com/kmpathi LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/k-m-pathi-446559151/ Telegram - https://t.me/kmpathi #Ethics101 #EthicsVsReligion #MoralPhilosophy #KMPathi #UPSCethics #GS4Ethics #EthicalReasoning #MoralAutonomy #EthicsVsReligion #MoralPhilosophy #CanMoralityExistWithoutGod #EthicsExplained #ReligionAndMorality #PhilosophyForUPSC #IASEthics #EthicsGS4 #MoralReasoning #EthicsWithoutReligion #SecularMorality #ReligiousMorality #EthicsAndValues #UPSCMotivation #GS4Strategy #EthicsDebate #EuthyphroDilemma #PlatoPhilosophy #UPSCPreparation #MoralPhilosophyExplained #PhilosophyExplained #GS4Ethics #FaithVsReason #MoralDilemma #UPSCContent #IASPreparation #EthicsLecture #Ethics101 #EthicsVsReligion #WhyBeMoral #MoralPhilosophy #UPSCGS4 #EthicalReasoning #MoralAutonomy #CanMoralityExistWithoutGod #EuthyphroDilemma #PlatoPhilosophy #FaithVsReason #SecularMorality #ReligiousMorality #EthicsWithoutReligion #La
