Is what is legal always ethical? And is what is ethical always legal? In everyday life—and even more in public and professional roles—we often rely on the law to guide our actions. Yet some of the most serious moral failures in history were carried out within the framework of law. This Ethics101 course video examines the relationship between ethics and law, and explains why legality alone is never sufficient for ethical judgment. In this session, we explore: = The meaning of law and ethics, and how they differ = Why legal and moral are not the same categories = How an action can be illegal yet morally right = How an action can be legal yet morally wrong = Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. on unjust laws and civil disobedience = Why legalism (“the law is enough”) is ethically inadequate = The limits of law in regulating professional and organisational behaviour = How ethics shapes law—and how law reflects social moral values Using real-life examples and philosophical reasoning, the video shows that: = Law sets a minimum standard of conduct = Ethics demands a higher standard—especially in leadership and public service The discussion is directly aligned with UPSC GS-IV Ethics, including previous year questions on: = Legality vs morality = Ethics and law in public life = Ethical decision-making beyond rules 🎯 Who this lesson is for: = UPSC GS-IV Ethics aspirants = Students of public administration, law, and philosophy = Civil servants and professionals facing rule-based dilemmas = Anyone reflecting on moral responsibility beyond compliance Time Stamps 00:13 - Introduction; Ethics & the Law 01:02 - The Definitions of Ethics & Law 01:38 - The Difference Between Ethics & Law 04:00 - Examples of Gandhi & Martin Luther King 04:50 - Martin Luther King's Perspective on Law vs. Ethics 05:14 - What Makes A Law Unjust 06:04 - Actions That Are Legal, Can Be Unethical: Examples 07:06 - Ethics Vs.
