Full Transcript

King Melchizedek of Salem, a priest of God Most High (El Elyon), receives tithes from Abraham in Genesis 14. He reappears in Psalm 110, the Dead Sea Scrolls, 2 Enoch, and the writings of Philo of Alexandria, and the Epistle to the Hebrews develops an analogy between Melchizedek and Christ. In this live lecture, John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place examines the primary sources to consider what can be known about the intent of the ancient authors who refer to Melchizedek and his priesthood. The lecture also explores how Melchizedek has been understood in Jewish and Christian traditions, and how Melchizedek’s priesthood later informed the Latter Day Saint understanding of the restoration of that priesthood. Join the livestream to participate in the discussion and to ask questions of our lecturer during the Q&A. This lecture is part of our series exploring Christianity and the Bible from an academic perspective through history, mythology, archaeology, theology, and biblical studies. In this presentation we focus on the Biblical King and Priest, Melchizedek. 📚 Browse our catalogue of free lectures at https://www.centreplace.ca/lectures Your generous support allows us to offer these lectures at no cost.
