Pharaoh Akhenaten promoted the exclusive worship of the Aten in ancient Egypt, rejecting all other gods centuries before monotheism developed in Israel. Was monotheism first invented during the Amarna period? In the 14th century BCE, Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV) abandoned Egypt’s traditional pantheon and promoted devotion to the Aten. Although he established a new henotheistic (possibly monotheistic) religion during his reign, after his death his successor Tutankhamun reversed the reforms.
