At the same time, Christian mystics sought an encounter with that same ineffable reality within the bounds of orthodoxy, though their writings and visions at times provoked suspicion. In this live lecture, Leandro Palacios of Toronto Centre Place examines how both traditions wrestle with the mystery of the unknowable. We will contrast the Gnostic pursuit of secret illumination with the mystics’ surrender of the self in love, and explore how the apophatic approach to God—knowing through unknowing—remained a shared yet contested language between speculation and faith, vision and obedience, illumination and grace.
