VFD(Variable Frequency drive) also know as VSD(Variable speed drive) is a motor controller device which changes the frequency and voltage of the incoming power supply to vary the speed of the AC motors. VFD controls and the startup and shutdown of the motor by controlling the acceleration and deacceleration of the motor. Due to soft start of motor, no inrush current is drawn by the motor with the use of VFD. Variable Frequency Drives(VFD) are used in industrial, commercial and residential building for motor and compressor controls. In commercial building VFDs are largely used in HVAC for Air handling unit(AHU) fan motor speed control in VAV systems. VFDs are also used with variable flow chilled water pumps, booster pumps and variable flow chillers. Apart from this VFDs are also used in Elevators and escalators to provided soft start and stops and avoid unwanted jerks. Use of VFDs provide many advantages which include: 1) Soft start and stops of the motor reduces stress on motor and connected load. 2) Reduces stress increase life time and decreases the maintenance cost of motor and mechanical parts. 3) VFDs provide large energy savings where variable motor speed is required. In this video we also discussed how a VFD works and how to connect to the BMS or SCADA system using software integration and hardware Interface through IO points. We also discussed about the issue of harmonics created by the VFD and how to mitigate the harmonics using external filters (like chokes, passive filters and active filters) or by changing internal design of the VFD( like C-Less Drive and Multi Pulse Drives). Use of these methods reduces the harmonics created by the VFD but also increases the VFD price. -----------------------------------LINKS-------------------------------------------- What is MCC ? https://youtu.be/Uh3EWXnDbRE Star Delta Starter Explained? https://youtu.be/GiPtQ4RXuwg ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please subscribe to our YouTube channel for BMS training videos.
