You might already know what fractions are. Numbers which are divided by a bar, consisting a numerator and a denominator. But do you what an equivalent fraction is? Imagine you have two cakes. You divide the first cake into two pieces and divide the other cake into 4 pieces. You give your friend one piece from the first cake and two pieces from the second cake. Now let’s consider this as a fractional word problem. The first cake would be written as ½ and second would be written as 2/4. If you look closely at these fractions both are equal to one another. You might ask how? Well, when you divide 2/4 it will give you ½ which is equal to the first fraction. Such fractions are called equivalent fractions.
