The submediant shift involves using a pivot note to move from one key to another that is four flats to the left on the circle of fifths. In this music composition lesson you'll learn a technique that will add colour to your harmony and that will offer a way to modulate in one move to a key that is four flats away on the circle of fifths. For example, the note C belongs to the tonic chord of C major but by repeating the note as the middle note of a tonic chord in Ab major, a moment of colour can be created in C major or a modulation to the flattened submediant key can be instantly achieved. A really useful device for composers and arrangers. 🔴 Subscribe for more videos just like this: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8yI8P7Zi3yYTsypera-IQg?sub_confirmation=1 🎵 Become a Music Matters Maestro: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8yI8P7Zi3yYTsypera-IQg/join 👕 Merch store: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8yI8P7Zi3yYTsypera-IQg/store 🕘 Timestamps 0:00 - Introduction to the submediant shift 0:35 - Pivot chord modulation 2:09 - Pivot note modulation 3:25 - Incorporating the submediant shift technique 🎓 Learn Music Online with Music Matters Learn music theory, aural tests, composition, sight reading, orchestration and more!
