Music Harmony Lessons - How to Convert Three-Part Texture to Four-Part Texture - Music Theory

In this music theory lesson you will learn how to take a piece of music written in three parts and convert it to a piece written in four parts. We begin by working through a chord analysis of a given piece written in three parts. We then maintain the outer parts and set about working out how best to organise two middle voices to replace the previous single middle voice. We consider when to maintain notes, when to change notes, when to double notes, how to space notes, and how to write middle parts that make linear as well as harmonic sense. You can also use this video to see how to reduce a four-part texture to a three-part texture.
