"Mean" mommies! That's the topic for this one, and there was so much that I had to actually narrate it this time rather than just use text boxes. Sorry in advance if that causes issues with translation. A couple of things: 1) When I refer to 'VOs' in the videos, I'm talking about the video operators taking footage of the macaques 2) VO's will use many tactics to cause macaque conflict including: feeding juveniles out of order in the hierarchy, moving babies away from their mothers so that they cry (which might cause higher ranking adults to lash out at the infant), switching babies between mothers, etc. There was so much to cover that I couldn't get to it all. Just know that almost all of the conflict you see in those videos is human-generated. 3) At the end, I discuss how the 'mean mommy myth' helps the monkey hate community rationalize t*rture of these animals and spread misinformation and ill-will about macaques specifically. Some of the screenshots of their comments can be disturbing. 4) I recommend Yardfish's series on "The Monkey T*rture Ring" (youtube) but proceed cautiously-- it is very, very hard to watch. 5) I forgot to include the 2017 Cambridge University study that showed content that creates strong negative reactions receives over 2x the engagement of neutral/positive content: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-relationships-research/article/how-social-are-social-media-a-review-of-online-social-behaviour-and-connectedness/5F24EBEC0BC036A5B9AF8D4816F05E2E #animalcruelty #endanimalcruelty #primatesarenotpets #babymonkey #cutebabymonkey #monkeys #socialmedia #monpai #monyet
