SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese), Dr Alcides Pissinatti, Director of the Rio de Janeiro State Primate Centre: "The golden lion tamarin, in the case of Rio State, does not have sufficient territory for itself, if you bring a new species with a greater colonising capacity than the golden lion tamarin, that species will occupy the territory and will prevail." 33. Various of golden lion tamarins LEAD IN: Primate experts are starting an experimental campaign to rid Rio de Janeiro of a pet which is thriving at the cost of rarer monkeys and tamarins. Common marmosets were brought to Rio as pets, but now they're threatening local biodiversity. STORYLINE: These are the Barra Woods, a small woodland in Rio de Janeiro. As in many other city parks the common marmoset has become a constant presence. They are liked and often admired, but that's because few people are aware that this is an invading species which is damaging the local ecology. Common marmosets were brought to Rio as pets from the northeastern states of Brazil. Just how that task is to be done has not yet been agreed. Only the male monkeys are castrated.
