When you raise the palate you will gain in volume to the audiences ears, since the sound waves can be projected more directly (not reflected more than once within the body, only break at the hard palate (not the soft tissue in the nose) and exit through a larger opening – the Mouth. The result is that you seem to be louder to the listeners ear, even though you don't sing louder at all.
