In this lesson in my "how to play piano for beginners" series of tutorials, we take a look at compound time. Compound time is a sort of time signature that can be counted in more than one way. The simplest example is 6/8 time, which can either be counted as six eighth notes/quavers or two dotted quarter notes/crotchets. Compound time signatures often crop up in piano music, and they're even quite common in a lot of songs you might want to play, so they're worth learning about. As with so many other things on the piano, challenging yourself to play and count rhythms in a slightly different way will improve your all-round playing ability and musical skills.
