We are joined by Matthew Ramsbotham (FA Education Performance Analyst), Geoff Noonan (FA Youth Coach Developer), Paul Holder (FA Youth Coach Developer), Dr Matthew Portas (FA Physical Performance Education Lead), Lee Skyrme (FA Men's U15 Head Coach) and Gemma Grainger (FA Women's U15 Head Coach) as they discuss the best ways to develop a games programme that works for your players. They consider three areas that are key to developing a successful and effective programme: • Understand the relevance of the 3 V’s (Volume, Variety and Variation). • Understand the value of a games programme that challenges individual players. • Understand how the games programme can develop the relevant skills to be a top player. We'd like to point out that the data presented on technical outcomes comparing 9v9 to 11v11, was in fact, the data of a 4v4 comparison 11v11 study done by Rick Fenoglio in 2003. There are a number of studies showing the different outcomes for small sided games when compared to larger number sided games, with a sample of research shown below: FA insight magazine – issue 2, volume 7, spring 2004 Small-sided games: The physiological and technical effect of altering pitch size and player numbers.
