Relational databases support many different data types Integer – Whole numbers (positive or negative) – INT (4 bytes), SMALLINT (2 bytes) Ex: 117, -52 Decimal –Numbers with fractional values or decimal points FLOAT, DECIMAL Ex: 3.14, -5.25 Character – Any kind of text - CHAR (fixed string of characters), VARCHAR (string of variable length, up to a specified max size) - Ex: Detroit, abc123 Time – The date, time, or both. Time may also include a time zone or specify a time interval. DATE, TIME, DATETIME, TIMESTAMP Ex: 01/17/2022 05:24:00 Binary – Stores the data in memory exactly as it is in the database, bit for bit as 1s and 0s BLOB, BINARY, VARBINARY, IMAGE 1001011101 Spatial – geometric information, such as lines, polygons, and map coordinates.
