The present progressive (or present continuous) expresses something that is happening in the moment in which someone is speaking. It can’t be used as a future tense like in other languages. The present progressive is formed by the present tense of “stare” + gerund. Present tense of “stare”: (io) sto, (tu) stai, (lui/lei/Lei) sta, (noi) stiamo, (voi) state, (loro) stanno. The gerund is formed by adding “-ando” in the “-are” verbs (e.g. mangiare- mangiando), “-endo” in the “-ere” and “-ire” verbs (e.g. leggere-leggendo, dormire-dormendo). Only a few verbs are irregular in the gerund. The most important are: “fare” - “facendo”, “bere”- “bevendo”, “dire” - “dicendo”. Here some examples of the present progressive: “sto camminando” = “I am walking”, “stiamo scrivendo” = “we are writing”, “stanno dormendo” = “they are sleeping”. You can also use our videos to learn new vocabulary. Write down the words as you see them to build your vocabulary. Remember that, except in some cases, in Italian, we don’t use the pronoun, since every subject has a different ending (we say “sto camminando” not “io sto camminando”) Ciao!
