Tomato leaf curl is a very common problem that gardeners encounter. While it may be alarming, especially to new or beginner gardeners, leaf curling is just a natural response of the tomato plant to outside stimulus. There are many reasons a tomato plant may have leaf curl. Upward tomato leaf curl is not a tomato plant disease but a physiological response to outside conditions. Some reasons your tomato plants have curling leaves are dry climate, high temperatures and strong winds. These are our normal weather conditions here in the high desert. Because of this, tomato leaf curl is really common. The cause of tomato leaf curl is that the plant cannot draw up water as fast as it its lost due to the heat, humidity and wind. Plants naturally lose water due to transpiration, this is increased in high temperatures, low humidity and strong or constant winds. The good news is that since tomato leaf curl isn't a disease there isn't anything wrong with your plant! Your plant will still grow and produce fruit just fine. You probably don't need to do anything for your plants.
