RSX-11: The Legacy of Digital’s Real-Time Executive
The RSX-11 family consists of multi-user real-time operating systems originally created by Digital Equipment Corporation for PDP-11 computers. Introduced in 1972, these systems were vital for industrial process control and general computing during the late twentieth century. Notable versions included RSX-11M for general use and the memory-resident RSX-11S for embedded applications. The architecture of this software significantly influenced the creation of modern platforms like OpenVMS and Windows NT. While the original developer eventually transferred ownership to Mentec, today the software is largely maintained by enthusiasts through emulation. Diverse international variants also emerged, including unauthorized clones produced within the Eastern Bloc.
