OS/8: The Primary PDP-8 Operating System
OS/8 was the primary operating system for the PDP-8 minicomputer, debuting in 1971 as a successor to earlier systems like PS/8. It featured a command-line interface modeled after more powerful systems, offering sophisticated tools for compiling, debugging, and managing files. Despite its minimal memory requirements, the software supported various storage hardware and utilized a flat filesystem where data was stored contiguously. The environment provided multiple programming options, including BASIC, FORTRAN, and several assemblers, to accommodate different technical needs. Today, the system is maintained through emulation images made available for non-commercial and historical purposes.
