Australia has the highest per capita penetration of roof-top solar generation systems in the world. Most of these solar generation systems are connected to the low voltage distribution networks, causing significant reverse power flow during high solar generation period. Compounding this situation is the steady increase in peak electricity demand caused by electrification of domestic gas appliances and uptake in electric vehicle charging. Optimal power flow techniques can be used by distribution utilities to model and forecast the import and export capacity of each supply connection point, allowing applications such as dynamic operating envelopes to be used to maximize the utilization of the distribution networks. Presenter Dr. Peter Wong, EIT lecturer and Director & Principal Consultant, Eagles Engineering Consultants Pty Ltd Peter is currently director and principal consultant of Eagles Engineering Consultants Pty Ltd, providing consulting services to utilities, industry and governments on electricity distribution engineering and renewable energy integration. Prior to that, Peter was with Jemena (a multi Australian utility operating in electricity, gas and water areas) for 25 years in various asset management roles, including the last seven years championing new network technologies and DER integration. Peter is a chartered professional engineer, a Fellow of Engineers Australia and a Senior Member of IEEE. He has a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hong Kong, post graduate diploma in leadership and management from University of Western Australia, and a PhD degree from Victoria University, Melbourne. His PhD thesis is on smart distribution voltage control in the presence of intermittent PV generation. Peter has a distinguished career as a professional engineer. He received the Energy Networks Association Overseas Study Tour Award in 2011 which he used to study smart grid developments in Asia, Europe and the U.S. He was awarded the John Madsen medal for the best paper published in the Australian Journal of Electrical & Electronic Engineering in 2015, and received the Lifetime Achievement in Energy Award from the Electrical Energy Society of Australia in 2017. __ The Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) is one of the only institutes in the world specializing in Engineering.
