Introduction to International Relations - Introduction to International Relations - What was the Cold War?

This video begins our class discussions on the Cold War - that period from roughly 1945 to 1990 that saw the world divided into two large hegemonic blocs between the United States and the Soviet Union, along with a number of Non-Aligned countries that created what became known as the Third World. This video serves as an overview of the different ways IR theories examine, analyze, and understand the nature, complexity, and decision-making of major state actors in the international arena, and seeks to understand not only why the Cold War came about, but also how and why is ended rather peacefully - at least in terms of the Soviet Union's collapse without a major war bring fought, as was so commonly believed at the time. Having the benefit of twenty-five years separating the end of the Cold War from the present, we are able to look academically retroactively at the strategic interests of states, the perceptions that shaped their foreign policies, and both the capabilities and limits of their foreign policies.
