Early visual processing happens in the back of the occipital lobe, but from there it needs further processing for us to recognize and act on what we're seeing. Indeed, visual information goes from that first stop in the primary visual cortex in two distinct 'streams' or pathways further into the brain: on toward the parietal lobe and one toward the temporal lobe. You'll see here how those streams accomplish different functions for visual perception and how damage to various places along those two pathways lead to very distinct neuropsychological symptoms that tell us about what those brain areas normally do. This is a lecture video for a university course in Cognitive Psychology taught by Dr. Brian W. Stone. You may wish to play it at x1.25 speed. As with anything taught at the undergraduate level the information here may be simplified, and at higher levels of study there is more nuance to all of it.
